Sponge Gourd Collective
Sponge Gourd Collective was co-founded in 2016 by Beatrix Chu, Daphne Xu, and Diane Zhou in their living room in Beijing. They are artists and filmmakers now based in Toronto and New York, and working across zines/publications, film/video, sculpture, and installation. They published People’s Square, a zine series documenting sites of urban transformation in Beijing, between 2016-2018, and explored the Jing-Jin-Ji (Beijing, Tianjin, and Hebei) megaregion plan in their project The Harmonious Commute from 2018-2020. The Harmonious Commute was supported by the Goethe Institute Beijing2022 project grant and China Residencies’ Slow Train Residency. Their work has been exhibited and sold in museums, galleries, and art book fairs, including i: Project Space (Beijing), Confucius Institute (Nürnberg), Nextex (St. Gallen), LA Art Book Fair, and Boston Hassle.
