From September 2016 - June 2018, Asian Arts Initiative created People:Power:Place, a cultural plan for Chinatown North/Callowhill, engaging 700+ individuals at 20+ community events during a community-led cultural planning process that captured 20+ recommendations for neighborhood improvements from neighbors seeking equitable change in their neighborhood.

People:Power:Place was a cultural planning process that centered the role of arts and culture in shaping how we live and work and build the Chinatown North/Callowhill neighborhood. By doing so, we advocated for a vibrant hub of cultural production in a neighborhood that places people first. The planning process was guided by a Working Group of neighbors, residents, business owners, developers, and non-profit leaders, to advocate together for a vision that would be inclusive of both “old” and “new.”

The plan was completed in collaboration with The Department of Places, a participatory architecture and design firm based in Los Angeles.
