“Viet Minh Dismounts A French Officer is based on a fighting technique in Vovinam, a martial arts system devised by my grandfather Nguyen Loc. My grandfather invented Vovinam as a way to assemble and train Vietnamese youth to express dissent and combat French colonial and military officials in the 1930s. Depicted in the painting is a “flying scissor” technique, a key feature in the Vovinam system that enables Vietnamese guerrilla fighters to dismount French and enemy soldiers from their horses. Today, these techniques are primarily taught for performance and demonstration purposes. This painting is the initial work in a series where I represent Vovinam techniques in their original anti-colonial war context to preserve and document my grandfather’s art form.” -- Alex Nguyen-Vo
