I Am A Vietnamese American Artist: MyLoan Dinh

MyLoan Dinh is a multidisciplinary artist. Reflecting on her experiences as a former refugee and woman of color, her work addresses everyday manifestations of cultural identity, memory and displacement. She explores, through diverse media, the porous boundary between personal and collective history. Her observations are at times serious, at others ironic, or even satirical. She deconstructs materials, images, objects and texts to (re)construct personal experiences and narratives within the greater cultural context of which she is a part.

What are you binge watching/reading? playing on repeat?

Reading On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous by Ocean Vuong. I love his beautiful poetic style of writing.

Binge watching late night political satire: Trevor Noah, Stephen Colbert, Seth Meyers, John Oliver because I can't stand watching "regular" news anymore.

What was the last song you had stuck in your head?

Somebody to Love by Queen

What is your favorite unpopular opinion?

Saying "everything happens for a reason" is as annoying as it is meaningless.

What was the last thing that made you smile or laugh?

My quirky family makes me laugh. My husband, daughter and son all have this dry sharp wit that can cut you to bits.

What is the most interesting piece of art you've seen?

There is a lot of amazing and interesting work being created. One of my favorites is We The People, 2015 by Hank Willis Thomas. It is a powerful piece - a quilt like maze made with used prison uniforms.
