Unity at the Initiative

Join us for a queer skate day as we celebrating Asian Arts Initiative's Unity at the Initiative with live music and performance.

Featuring: Sam Rise, Vitche-Boul Ra, Icon Ebony Fierce, Messapotamia Lefae

Location: E. Poplar Rec Center, Skate Park section

Parking: Street Parking Available

Doors: 1:30pm

Start of show: 2:00pm

East Poplar Recreation Center is a 4.8-acre city park, featuring a swimming pool, tennis courts, baseball courts & a playground. The skate park features small and medium ramps, ledges and curbs. Please bring your own skateboard or rollerblades, and your own safety equipment. Visitors will sign up for skate times during the event on a first-come first-serve basis.

This is a free event but donations are welcome on Venmo @beardedladiescabaret or, for tax-deductible donations, through our Paypal : paypal.me/BeardedLadiesCabaret. Donations will support future free performances on the Beardmobile, land acknowledgement reparations, and the work of our community partners.

Unity at the Initiative is a multi-site multimedia visual exhibition and in-home experience centered on the work of artist and skater Jeffrey Cheung and their UNITY initiative out of Oakland CA. Unity at the Initiative was envisioned as a means to increase representation of Queer and Trans artists of color; to embellish the gathering spaces of queer folks--community centers, city parks, art galleries--with more diverse representations of queer and trans bodies.

In light of the Pandemic and in response to the nation’s reckoning with racial equity, Cheung and Asian Arts Initiative have re-imagined the project as a pathway to the artistic integrity and freedom of queer and trans Philadelphians of color. Unity at the Initiative endeavors to protect continuity for a creative sector whose “2020 troubles” are compounded by under-representation and outright injustices.
